Art in the City, a festival that has been bringing contemporary art to the public space of České Budějovice and other South Bohemian towns for 17 years, has become an inseparable part of cultural life in the region.
This project, run over many years by the association Umění ve městě, serves as a platform for dialogue between contemporary art, the urban environment and the local community. Every edition brings singular works of art and site-specific installations that not only enrich the city aesthetically but also reflect current themes resonating with local history and with global social challenges alike.
The central theme chosen for 2025 is Reconnect. It is inspired not only by the 760th anniversary of the founding of České Budějovice, but by a wider need to return to our roots — to history, culture and nature. At a time when technological progress and globalisation often leave us feeling uprooted and without social or cultural anchorage, the festival turns to rediscovering those lost ties.
Society today often finds itself caught between a fast pace of life driven by technological innovation and the need to slow down and return to the basic values that connect us with nature and with our cultural history. Reconnect sets out to reflect on that artistically. The aim is to open a space in which to consider how people today might find a balance again between technological progress and the need to stay anchored in cultural and natural values.
