Sofa-Woman

A reclining female body stylised into the form of a sofa, a favourite fixture of Czech households — that is, into an object meant for sitting or lying down. The sculpture takes up the perennially inspiring subject of the human figure. The artist uses sandstone, a material characteristic of sculptures placed in the Czech landscape over the past several centuries. Through honest hand carving, “Sofa” takes its place among classical sculptural works, while a pronounced exaggeration of both form and meaning comes into play. It is precisely this balancing between the classical and familiar on one side and the mildly provocative and surprising on the other that the artist is after.
