Liberation

The central motif of the sculpture is reinforcement freeing itself from a block of concrete — a symbol of the effort to escape the fixed forms, norms, controls and constraints of modern life. The reinforcement, once firmly bound to the concrete core, gradually works loose until it emerges from the surface entirely, in an unusual way. This process of liberation expresses the human wish to find balance, authenticity and freedom in a world that is often held tight by rigid structures and overloaded with technological and social demands. Concrete as a symbol of civilisation and progress contrasts with the organic movement of the freed reinforcement, which seems to long to return to its original form and, as iron ore, to grow back into the earth. It points to a search for origins and for natural order.
