Asteroid II

The sculpture Asteroid II was made in 2020–2021 and is a larger version of the sculpture Asteroid I. It is 350 cm high and weighs about 4 tonnes. Both sculptures are inspired by the beauty of cosmic boulders and asteroids shaped by impacts and collisions with other bodies met on their long journey through interplanetary space. They can be a threat to the Earth as well as a messenger delivering material from another star. The sculptures are made using the tools of digital sculpture. The modelled shapes are translated into layers, much as in 3D printing. Each layer is cut from 10 mm thick stainless steel sheet. Most of the sculpture's surface consists of the laser-cut faces. Light, together with the structure, models the shapes of the Asteroid so changeably and so lightly that a sculpture weighing several tonnes seems immaterial, almost like a hologram.
