Head II, a Sculpture for Lawrence Ferlinghetti

I like to dedicate my sculptures to someone. Often to architects, writers, philosophers or poets I admire. At other times to places, events, or feelings and moods. I find the process of their making hard to explain. Sometimes I think about a sculpture for years, at other times the impulse is a second's inspiration. Three large stones spotted by chance in three different quarries... Three favourite beat poets: Ginsberg, Kerouac, Ferlinghetti... Three of their famous books: Howl, On the Road, A Coney Island of the Mind... Two of the sculptures are finished so far: Head for Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Howl for Allen Ginsberg. They came about as freely as poems are freely written. Only in granite it goes far more slowly.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti died on 22 February this year. He was 102. This sculpture is my tribute to a great poet and a reminder of him.
