Hair and hairstyles are among the artist's favourite subjects. He is fascinated and inspired by the forms of braids, buns and various hair structures from different periods and cultures. In his sculptures he tries to reflect them and to project his own sense of structural form into them. He explains his personal preoccupation with tied-up hairstyles in several ways. One is that a tied hairstyle has a closed shape that gives a feeling of safety. At the same time, tied hair suggests something self-enclosed, untouchable. Another reason is its role as a social marker. A woman identifies herself somehow through her hairstyle, attracts, says something. The hairstyle becomes a symbol, one with endless variants. That is why the artist's sculptures have no face. The point is not a superficial appraisal of the hairstyle but its structure, its composition and the recognition of its symbolic value. In addition, the oversized sculpture of Gertrude takes on an almost animal character thanks to the “standing” hair, which lightens any reading of it as merely a hairstyle.
