The Body of Sound

Sound accompanies us at every step. If all sounds were material, there would be no room left for us. At an exaggerated scale, the sculpture The Body of Sound shows what such a science-fiction scene might look like. The aim of the project is to point to the power of the sound around us and to grant it a piece of physical space. As musicians, the subject of sound was a natural choice for us. The shape of the sculpture follows the 2D shape of a sound track we recorded and mixed. The recording is a compilation of several tracks recorded in České Budějovice. It mixes the sounds of street performers, the opening of the doors of local houses, the rush of weirs and the audible signal for a green traffic light. The sculpture was made with the local sculpture and architecture studio Scoolpt, which helped us turn a sculpture of a few inconspicuous city sounds into a solid block of concrete weighing roughly one tonne two hundred kilos, using 3D printing. By its sheer weight the material aptly underlines the vast difference between the immaterial and the material.
