Beneath the Surface

The project Beneath the Surface enters public space as a quiet gesture: three larger-than-life fragments of a human belly, half sunk into the ground. The navel works here as a symbol of the original connection to another body and of a shared experience we all carry. Monumentally enlarging an intimate part of the body creates a contrast between vulnerability, emotion and the public space into which something normally invisible is brought to the surface. At the same time the half-buried objects recall archaeological fragments of a collective organism and point to the interconnection of body, memory and place.
