Jakub Flejšar

Jakub Flejšar was born on 27 June 1980 in Prague. He studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, in Sculpture Studio II led by Professor Jiří Beránek, completing his studies in 2007.

His work starts from the figure — figures, heads and fragments of the human body — which in his hands gradually turn into ever more abstract, geometricised shapes. Characteristic of him is a principle of assembling and “stacking” forms; he works most often with wood and metal. He describes his own work in these words: “I change the energy of a space — I make it strange, I bring it to life and I transform it.” He is concerned with human existence, solitude and the position of the individual in society.

Since 2002 he has exhibited regularly, both solo and in groups, in the Czech Republic and abroad — exhibitions are documented in Italy, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, the USA, Canada, Turkey and Greece. His works include pieces placed at the Golf Hostivař Gallery.

Alongside sculpture he has long been involved in snowboard cross — he competed for the Czech Republic himself and is now coach of the junior snowboard cross national team and personal coach to the Olympic champion Eva Samková (today Adamczyková), who won gold under his guidance at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

At the Art in the City festival in České Budějovice he made the work Beggar and also showed monumental geometric figures inspired by nature.
