Tomáš Zelený

MgA. Tomáš Zelený is a sculptor living and working in Brno. His path to sculpture began in Náchod, where he attended the art programme of the local school of arts. He studied at the Secondary Technical School of Stonemasonry and Sculpture in Hořice, where he first met stone as a material to work with, and then continued at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Brno University of Technology, where he developed his artistic idiom under Professor Michal Gabriel and his assistant Mgr. Tomáš Medek. He says of his own work that he creates “works inspired by nature and by the world of dreams, in which I look for a balance between reality and imagination”. He works with several materials — his favourite is Hořice sandstone, for outdoor exhibitions he uses fibreglass (cheap and durable, if toxic), and he also experiments with wood. His works include the life-size fibreglass sculpture “Drapery”, which captures a woman in the act of undressing, with cut-out openings (shown in 2019 in the Chateau Garden and the centre of Kroměříž as part of the exhibition Sculptures in the Garden).

Alongside his own work he teaches — he runs sculpture courses at the Art-Path studio in Brno.

For Art in the City 2026 he made the installation “Flock” for Pelhřimov (mixed media, the passage next to the Deanery — the historic walls): a series of crows taking up the relationship between individuality and collective movement; the motif of the white crow opens up questions of difference and exclusion. The project grew out of a personal experience after an injury, when the motif of crows kept returning in dreams.
