Žofie Kumštová

Žofie Kumštová (*1991, Prague) is a Czech artist whose work moves between painting and sculpture. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the studios of Martin Mainer, Petr Dub and Marek Meduna, and completed a placement in Tomáš Hlavina’s Sculpture studio, a study stay at the Universitat de Barcelona and an exchange programme at the Šaloun Studio under Paulina Ołowska.

She works chiefly with bleeding ink painting, whose mutability and lack of sharpness she sees as an image of the fragility of human memory. Chance marks, imprecisions and blurred form mirror the way a person holds on to memories. Alongside the ink paintings she also makes oil paintings that take up the same motifs, but whose solidity and material substance make them a deliberate counterpart to their transience.
