Sophie Nicklas

Sophie Nicklas is a German interdisciplinary artist, illustrator and comics author. Her work moves between contemporary drawing, experimental comics and mixed-media storytelling; it often reflects feminist themes, cultural narratives and human relationships. She studied visual communication with a focus on illustration and comics at the Kunsthochschule Kassel and Graphic Storytelling at the LUCA School of Arts in Brussels. Sources give her as based in both Brussels and Regensburg.

Since 2023 she has worked freelance as an illustrator and comics author. She contributes to the children’s magazine Zeit Leo (illustrations and how-to features) and to the children’s comics magazine Volle Polle, and has worked with Missy Magazine (pop culture and feminism). Her short comics have been published by the international publishers kuš! Komiks (Latvia), KutiKuti (Finland) and Spross Magazin (Austria). She is a member of the team at VROOM — a Brussels space for contemporary drawing and experimental comics — and leads workshops in experimental drawing and comics (among others at Vroom and Zineclub Muntpunt in Brussels).

Awards: 2018 winner of the illustration competition / design prize of the publisher Büchergilde Gutenberg for her illustrations to Theodor Storm’s novella Ein Doppelgänger.

Exhibitions and appearances (selection): the Lustr festival, Prague 2023 — Showcase of Young Talents and live comics readings (together with Mathilde Paix and Sarah Böttcher); publications and shows of the comics and illustration class of the Kunsthochschule Kassel (Triebwerk, Rotopol, illuklasse.de). In 2025 she completed a month-long artist residency in České Budějovice in cooperation with the CreArt Network and Budějovice 2028 — European Capital of Culture; during it she created the work Whispers of the Community — Storytelling on Flags for the Art in the City festival (seven illustrated flags; it was the first time she had worked with appliqué).
