Miloslav Fekar

Miloslav Fekar is a Czech sculptor. Education: 1988–1992 the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Uherské Hradiště (painting); 1992–1996 the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, sculpture studios (Hugo Demartini, Jan Hendrych, Jindřich Zeithamml); 1996–1998 the Faculty of Fine Arts of Brno University of Technology, sculpture under Vladimír Preclík; 1996–2000 the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, stage design (Miroslav Melena, Pavel Kalfus).

With his sculptures he helps shape a particular kind of sculptural postminimalism. A characteristic feature is the joining of sculpture with landscape; his main material is wood, and rustic carpentry design and a hand-made character come to the fore. He makes monumental wooden sculptures for outdoor settings along two lines — organic forms inspired by the morphology of nature, and geometric architectural structures. He also designs functional architectural elements for residential buildings, benches, seating, pergolas, bridges and winter gardens, and works in stage design and photography.

In 2000 he founded a sculpture laboratory (a “sculpture orchard”) of 7,500 m² in Bezměrov near Kroměříž. Cycles: Wandering (1999) — movable wooden structures; Shrines (2001) — objects with internal lighting.

Exhibitions: since 1993 more than 60 solo and group exhibitions, among them Stromovka Prague (1994–1999), the Art-Omi residency in New York (1999), the National Gallery in Prague (2003), Caesar Gallery Olomouc (2008), Kaple Gallery Valašské Meziříčí; symposia in Finland, Germany, Poland and the USA. Works for public space: the grounds of the Sluňákov ecological centre, Belveder Park in Zbraslav, projects for Jablonec nad Nisou, works for the Houses of Nature.

Awards: Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants (2000, 2004).
