Ladislav Plíhal

Sculptor and designer, born in 1983. From 2004 to 2010 he studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Brno University of Technology (Sculpture Studio 2, headed by Professor Jan Ambrůz), in 2007–2008 he completed a placement at the University of Leeds, School of Design in the United Kingdom, and in 2014–2015 he studied industrial design at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. He works with steel tubes and sections, wood, cast iron and fibreglass; his work moves between free art, usually intended for public space, and design (geometric objects, kinetic sculptures, installations examining the destructive effects of explosives on various materials). He works with Čestmír Suška’s Bubec sculpture and art studio in Prague-Řeporyje.

Solo exhibitions: Landscape computer paintings (Leeds, 2008), First Explosions (Explosia a.s., Pardubice, 2010), Everything (Uherské Hradiště, 2019); group exhibitions include Art Safari (2007–2014, including Art Safari 27, Prague, 2014).

Works: Propeller — a twelve-metre kinetic sculpture installed in 2017 on a hill near Ořech, the object Little House in the Bubec garden in Řeporyje, the Fajfka bench (with Čestmír Suška), wooden outdoor rain tables and benches, and the Puryko wooden children’s construction set.

For the Art in the City festival he made the object Little House and Piggy (2010) and the work KASUMATO (Hluboká u Borovan, 2022).
