Jan Šácha

Jan Šácha (*1992, České Budějovice) is a Czech sculptor. He studied stone sculpture at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Český Krumlov, where he learned the basics of sculpture and ways of perceiving mass and first glimpsed the world of making art. From 2012 he studied at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art of the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň, in Professor Jiří Beránek’s Sculpture and Space studio. He is fascinated by the variety of ways the sculptor’s craft can be applied, by the human body and by the contradictory world of civilisation; exploring on these levels gives him room to find and sense his own inner world, which becomes visible through figurative and abstract free work. In June 2016 he had a solo exhibition at the Vinohradská 12 Gallery in Prague (a site-specific installation, opening 9 June 2016) — the installation captured a vision playing out in abandoned houses, tangled structures, shafts and air conditioning; he wrote of it: “What goes on in the corners of the city that are closed to us and that we cannot see into?

The complicated mazes of pipework have a world and inhabitants of their own… The city, people, thoughts threaded through with a network of tireless creatures that feed on uncertainty.” The exhibition was meant to prompt reflection on fears, phobias and uncertainties.
