Andrej Margoč

Andrej Margoč (b. 1977) is a Slovak sculptor living and working in Bratislava. In 2003 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava.

He works in cycles. The cycle “Transformations of the Self-Portrait” starts from a deformed portrait of himself — profiles of the face, mirrorings and sets of objects derived from a single head; in his works he uses bronze combined with glass and stone, and epoxy for outdoor pieces. Optical lenses are another motif in his work. The cycle “FAT” is devoted to sugar, to addiction to it and to its effects on health.

Exhibitions (selection): Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum; SPP Gallery, Bratislava (the solo exhibition “A Close Encounter of a New Kind”, 2010); the Bratislava City Gallery; the House of Art, Bratislava; the Sculpture and Object survey (Bratislava); Perlhofgasse Gallery and the Slovak Institute, Austria; exhibitions in Italy, Spain and the Czech Republic; the Sculpture Line festival.

Restoration work: in 2019, during the renovation of the Bratislava Calvary, he made a replica of the corpus of Jesus Christ in artificial material for the central cross and took part in restoring the original.

At the Art in the City festival he showed the work “Two (from the cycle Transformations of the Self-Portrait)” in 2016 (epoxy, the blind arm of the Malše, České Budějovice) and the work “Cake Tower” in 2022 (České Budějovice).
